Looking back

Another Sunday, another picture from Magpie Tales!

Bathers, 1950 by George Tooker

I sometimes look back.

I look at what I was, what I’ve done and what I haven’t done. Why this, why not that?

Everything I see as I look over my shoulder is there for eternity, right or wrong, like it or not.  There is no going back, no second chances.

One day I will stand in line stripped of my finery, no longer wrapped in the trappings of self-indulgence. Am I to be judged on what I’ve become, what I might have been or what I was?

Perhaps I will be able to wash away my mistakes.

I wonder what lies beyond the doorway.

I wonder.
