They call it sport!

I saw this picture at Sunday Photo Fiction and it brought back unpleasant memories!

The aim at SFF is to write about 200 words. This is 201 words so it's pretty close!

Fasten your seatbelts ladies and gentlemen!

Our friend Ollie repairs cars for a living, and often when he comes across an unmendable jalopy in he buys it for a couple of quid and turns it into what they call a banger. Why name it after a sausage I really do not know but hey-ho.

Well, several of us stupidly agreed to go Banger Racing with him.

I can’t tell you how awful it was. Ollie and lots of other scruffy young men flew around an octagonal cinder track in brightly painted cars deliberately bumping into each other. They call it sport! Sport my…!

I was constantly sprayed with grit. The cars roared, pop music boomed, a commentator yelled, and all I could smell was hot dogs and onions. And the boozed-up people there; well my dears, they were so common!

Anyway, I’ve persuaded my mates to come with me to a polo match. Proper sport. I’ve had to lay down some ground rules like men must wear jackets and ties, the girls dresses, and Ollie has to somehow remove the grease and oil from his hands and face.

Instead of hot dogs, we’ll have canapés, instead of warm beer, champagne.

I just hope they don’t embarrass me.

  2. LOL She's a proper girl that goes to proper sports. She might have to change her friends. ;)

    1. Absolutely dwarling! I won't change them for new ones, just change them to my more correct way of thinking and behaving!

  3. I have a feeling they might embarrass you ;-) Nice story, I like the contrast and the voice really sets it off.

  4. Oh my giddy Awwnt! Why was a nice gel like you hanging around with riff-raff? Love your voice in this, Rosie :) Mind you, I'm quite partial to bangers and mash (with gravy of course)

    1. Actually they are not a bad bunch! They say opposites attract. I feel a song coming on......- 'give us a bash of the bangers and mash my mother used to make'!

  5. Professor Higgins, I presume? The young lady needs some help with her uncouth friends.
