Rosey, artist

I'm having a go at this week's Flash Fiction for Aspiring Writers where we are given a picture on which to base our tales.

I thought it was a masterpiece. I spent ages in the garden with my easel, canvas, brushes and paints. Admittedly I ended up with more paint on me than on the canvas, but it was worth getting in a mess for.

I was so proud of my painting. I titled it The Rose Garden and gave it pride of place on my living room wall, the first thing you saw when entering the room.

To my astonishment, when my friend Keith  came to see me he walked through the door, stopped dead and physically shuddered.

I explained that it wasn’t an impressionist painting of a crime scene, and the blood splatters were actually rose petals.

Anyway, I have now renamed it Bloodbath and relegated it to the spare room.

  1. Oh no! Her beautiful painting wasn't so beautiful to Keith. Maybe after a few years in the spare room it's beauty will come out again and it will have a place on her living room wall. I enjoyed this story Rosey! Thank you so much for participating in Flash Fiction for Aspiring Writers challenge!

    1. Thanks PJ. I still think it's worthy of a place in an exhibition. - preferably not one with a war theme though!

  2. I think that if I tried to paint a rose garden then it will probably look like a crime scene! It made me giggle :-)

  5. Even if its a painting of a crime scene it should not be relegated to the spare room. Maybe it will find its way back to its rightful place. Enjoyed reading your story.

  7. That's very funny. I guess maybe the painting is something else in every beholders eye possibly.

  10. I like reading this tale. It's soft in the beginning and towards the end it makes me feel sorry for the painter :)

    1. Wow, what lovely words. I blog for light relief and I don't take things very seriously when I'm here. There's enough of that in my day to day life.

    1. Beauty is in the eye of the beholder, and I think it's a thing of true beauty - even if it does end up as an advert for sticking plasters!

  12. Lol! You had me from "Admittedly I ended up with more paint on me than on the canvas" to the very last sentence. Her masterpiece didn't get the exact reaction was going for, but at least it was noticed, right?? Lol. This is funny, kind of heartbreaking, and everything in between. Great job with this prompt.

    1. Thanks Isabelle I'm glad it had the desired effect. I guessed that most people would take a serious approach to the prompt and I'm never one to follow convention!

  13. Keith should have been relegated to the spare room and the painting should have been left where it was. When we create, we put a par of ourselves on display and must grow a thick skin from those who see themselves as critics. And now I read at the bottom of this post that "Rosey Pinkerton is a figment of Keith Hillman's overactive imagination!" I'm so confused.

  15. Good for her, being flexible enough to see her work in a different light and accept it that way. And hey, maybe her Secret Talent is painting gruesome scenes -- someone has to do it!
